Lean Manufacturing

Value Stream Mapping Training

Based on Learning to See, from the Lean Enterprise Institute (LEI), participants in this workshop will learn to identify where the value streams are in their operations, map them "from door-to-door" and realize the wastes that exist in their current process. Armed with now being able to "see" their wastes, participants will learn the process of constructing a future state of their value streams and instituting an implementation plan of achieving that future state. The result is successful value stream mapping, a tool to direct lean improvements.

Objectives/Topics:
  • Definition of value stream mapping
    • Material flow
    • Information flow
    • Process time vs. manufacturing lead time
  • How to identify value streams and product families
  • Value stream management
  • Creating a current state map
  • Creating a future state map using the eight questions for developing future state
  • Developing an implementation plan

Simulation:

Using LEI's Acme Stamping case study, participants will implement the value steam mapping process by analyzing data and mapping a current state, then applying lean concepts to design and map a future state. Along the way, participants will decide what improvements must happen to achieve the desired future state.

Prerequisites:

Lean 101: Principle of Lean Manufacturing

Course Length:

Kaizen Facilitator Training

Kaizen events are the vehicle to implementing lean tools and concepts. Kaizen events are well-scoped, focused improvement efforts that utilize a team-based approach to eliminating wastes. The Kaizen Facilitator Training course is designed to teach a standard kaizen process that can be used for implementing lean tools, such as quick changeover, 5 S, cellular/layout and TPM.

Objectives/Topics:
  • Overview of kaizen
  • Preparing for a kaizen event
  • Standard process for a 3-5 day kaizen event
    • Training
    • Observe current process
    • List wastes
    • Set goals
    • Brainstorm countermeasures
    • Try-storm improvements
    • Restart line and measures results
    • Standardize improvements
    • Develop report
    • Present results
    • Follow-through actions
  • Forms and tools for quickly collecting and analyzing data
  • Preparing a final report for management
  • Estimating the impact of the event

Simulation:

The workshop focuses on training participants to be able to facilitate kaizen events. Attendees will participate and take part in leading a simulated kaizen event applying the standardized kaizen process from the lecture. Simulation activities include observing and measuring a current process, brainstorming wastes, making and documenting improvements and preparing and presenting results to management.

Prerequisites:

Lean Enterprise Certificate Series and a Kaizen event

Course Length:
8 hours
Class Size:
6-12 participants
Cost:

$6000 to purchase an entire class for your company
$995 per person for open enrollment

Training held at UAH will also be charged $12 per person for consumables.

Principles of Lean Office (101)

Do you realize that only 20% of total lead time results from manufacturing activities? This means that even with a "lean" shop floor atmosphere, a traditional functional office environment can serve as a bottleneck for responding to customers. This course will provide an understanding of the characteristics and benefits of a Lean office vs. a traditional office environment, and participants will learn how to categorize value added vs. non-value added activities in an office environment and learn ways to eliminate waste.

Objectives/Topics:

Lean Office Course Description

  • Introduction to Lean Office
  • Eight wastes in the office
  • Apply lean tools to the office
    • Standard work
    • Workplace organization 5 S/Visual Factory
    • Point of use storage
    • Pull systems
    • Cellular office layout
    • Work balancing and team work
    • Cross training
  • Keys to implementation

Simulation:

This course features a hands-on simulated office environment where participants will experience the benefits of Lean Office principles, such as meeting quality, cost, delivery and service targets, by applying the lecture concepts and measuring the impact.

Who Should Attend:

Result-oriented managers, team leaders and others directly
involved in daily operations, or profit improvement strategies
with bottom-line responsibility.

Course Length:
8 hours
Class Size:
8-10 participants
Cost:

$5000 to purchase an entire class for your company
$495 per person for open enrollment

Training held at UAH will also be charged $12 per person for consumables.
